Intelligent Shield Construction

Shield tunneling construction near risk sources has become increasingly common in urban infrastructure projects. This method is vital for expanding urban subway systems but poses significant challenges due to the complex interplay between existing structures and new tunneling activities. Key risks include ground subsidence, uneven settlement, and structural damage to nearby buildings. To address these challenges, researchers have developed an intelligent management and control platform integrating advanced technologies like Building Information Modeling (BIM), Geographic Information Systems (GIS), and the Internet of Things (IoT).

This innovative platform includes a three-dimensional (3D) model for real-time monitoring and risk assessment. The system calculates both immediate and long-term settlement impacts caused by tunneling. By combining analytical models with real-time monitoring data, it provides accurate predictions of ground deformation. The platform also issues automated alerts when calculated risks exceed predefined thresholds, enabling proactive measures such as adjusting shield machine parameters or increasing structural reinforcement. Such features improve safety and minimize disruptions in densely populated urban areas.

A successful application of this system was demonstrated in Beijing Metro Line 12’s under-crossing of Line 10. The platform effectively monitored and controlled settlement, reducing potential risks and ensuring the structural integrity of surrounding infrastructure. With its ability to enhance precision and safety, this technology sets a new standard for urban tunneling projects. Although initial implementation costs are high, its long-term benefits include improved risk management and economic efficiency, making it a valuable investment for future construction projects.
